DAR ES SALAAM, November 1 (Xinhua) — President Hussein Ali Mwinyi of Tanzania's semi-autonomous Zanzibar Region was sworn in for a second five-year term on Saturday after winning Wednesday's general election with 74.8 percent of the vote.

The oath of office was administered by Khamis Ramadhani Abdallah Shaaban, Chief Justice of Zanzibar. The ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials, including Tanzania's Vice President Philip Mpango, diplomats, and tens of thousands of Zanzibaris.

After the oath of office, H.A. Mwinyi inspected the guard of honour of the armed forces.

Speaking on Thursday evening after the Zanzibar Electoral Commission declared him the winner, H.A. Mwinyi promised to put national interests first in his new administration.

He called on the 10 opposition presidential candidates running in the elections to put aside their differences and work together to protect the interests of Zanzibar.

H. A. Mwinyi was first elected President of Zanzibar in 2020. –0–
