SHANGHAI, November 1 (Xinhua) — China's 42nd Antarctic expedition set sail from Shanghai on Saturday.

"During this expedition, China plans to conduct experimental drilling on lakes located deep within the Antarctic ice sheet for the first time. Using domestically developed hot-water and thermal-melting drilling systems, we will conduct clean drilling and sampling in ice more than 3,000 meters thick," noted Wei Fuhai, leader and chief scientist of the 42nd Chinese Antarctic Expedition.

Antarctic subglacial lakes are characterized by extreme conditions, including high pressure, low temperatures, lack of light, and oligotrophic conditions. These conditions foster unique ecosystems and preserve a vast archive of ice sheet history and climate change. Therefore, studying these lakes is essential for understanding sedimentary processes and the evolution of life.

To further understand Antarctica's role in global climate change, expedition members will collect long-term observations in key regions such as the Amundsen Sea and Ross Sea.

Continuously improving our knowledge, ability to protect and develop Antarctica is not only an inevitable requirement for China, which aspires to become a powerful maritime power, but also a way to make new contributions to the promotion of the idea of building a community of shared destiny for mankind, noted Long Wei, Deputy Director of Polar Expeditions at the State Oceanic Administration of China. -0-
