UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) — The United Nations and its humanitarian partners have collected more than 24,000 tonnes of humanitarian aid at crossing points in the Gaza Strip since the ceasefire agreement came into force on October 10, a UN spokesman said on Friday, citing UN Mechanism 2720.

“More people in need have also been able to access this assistance, which includes food, medicine and medical supplies, nutritional supplements and shelter materials, thanks to the resumption of distribution and services at the community and household levels,” said Stéphane Dujarric, spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, at a daily briefing.

Furthermore, he said, the number of interceptions or looting of supplies collected by the UN and its partners at Gaza crossings has significantly decreased. He added that between October 10 and 28, only 5 percent of collected supplies were reportedly intercepted, compared to approximately 80 percent between May 19 and October 9.

S. Dujarric said the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) expects the number of intercepted shipments to continue to decrease as more humanitarian and commercial supplies arrive. "We continue to call for the opening of all crossings and for an increase in the number of UN agencies and organizations authorized to deliver humanitarian aid into Gaza."

Meanwhile, OCHA said humanitarian partners continue to escalate their efforts despite reports of Israeli airstrikes across Gaza, and reminded the Israeli military of its responsibility to ensure the protection of civilians and humanitarian workers at all times throughout its military operations.

Since the ceasefire began, the World Health Organization has delivered more than 840 pallets of life-saving medications to Gaza, including insulin, auxiliaries, essential drugs, cholera kits, and surgical kits. –0–
