Moscow, October 31 (Xinhua) — This year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. It also marks the 80th anniversary of Taiwan's liberation from Japanese occupation. This date is the subject of an article by Chinese Ambassador to Russia Zhang Hanhui, "Rebirth of the Nation," published Thursday in the Russian newspaper Izvestia.
"Eighty years ago, the Chinese people ended Japan's half-century of colonial occupation of the island and finally returned to their homeland. This was a crucial outcome of the victory in the War of Resistance Against Japan and an integral part of the post-war international order. International legal documents such as the Cairo and Potsdam Declarations enshrined China's sovereignty over Taiwan, unequivocally declaring it an inalienable part of the Republic's territory," the article states.
However, separatist forces are active on the island, and the US continues to perpetuate the myth of the island's "uncertain status," condoning the separatist activities of proponents of "Taiwan independence." "Their primary goal is to advance the strategy of 'using Taiwan to contain China' in order to prevent the full unification and revival of the PRC," the ambassador writes.
"The Taiwan question is at the core of China's core interests. The one-China principle is a universally recognized norm of international relations and a broad consensus of the international community," the article states. China has established Taiwan Liberation Memorial Day by law. It will be celebrated annually on October 25. This political decision demonstrates China's firm commitment "to safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity, underscoring its indisputable historical and legal justification for sovereignty over Taiwan, and cementing the broad international community's commitment to the one-China principle," Zhang Hanhui notes.
According to him, the memory of Taiwan's liberation from Japanese occupation is a tribute to the lessons of history and the heroism of fallen heroes, a confirmation of the shared desire for peaceful development and the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
"Given the current highly ambiguous international situation, it is more important than ever to defend the results of World War II and the post-war international order," emphasizes Chinese Ambassador to the Russian Federation Zhang Hanhui.
"The liberation of Taiwan from Japanese occupation is not only a milestone in the Chinese people's struggle against foreign invaders; it is a significant joint victory for the peoples of the anti-fascist coalition, including the Soviet people. During those dark years, our peoples supported each other, fighting shoulder to shoulder against the enemy, defending justice and peace at the cost of blood," the article states.
"We are ready to work with the Russian side to promote a correct understanding of the history of World War II, steadfastly defend its outcome, uphold the post-war international order, and resolutely oppose any forms of separatism for 'Taiwan independence' and external interference. We must remember history and build the future together, making a greater contribution to the great cause of building a community with a shared future for humanity," concludes Chinese Ambassador to the Russian Federation Zhang Hanhui.
