KUALA LUMPUR, October 31 (Xinhua) — The 15th Informal Defense Ministers' Meeting of China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Friday, as part of Malaysia's rotating ASEAN chairmanship. The meeting was chaired by Chinese and Malaysian defense ministers Dong Jun and Mohamed Khaled Nordin.
As Dong Jun noted, under the strategic guidance of the leaders of China and ASEAN countries, defense cooperation between them has been steadily expanding, making an important contribution to strengthening peace and stability in the region.
According to the Chinese Defense Minister, amid chaotic global changes, it is even more imperative for China and ASEAN to act as anchors of stability and jointly build a closer China-ASEAN community with a shared future. He stated that China expects to work with all parties to remain true to the original spirit of seeking self-strength through unity and to strengthen the protective barrier of common security.
Dong Jun emphasized that, drawing on Eastern wisdom and consolidating the strength of the East, China will take practical actions to maintain long-term peace and stability in the South China Sea. He added that China remains firmly committed to win-win cooperation and building closer people-to-people ties through mutual learning to enhance collective resilience in responding to security challenges.
Mohamed Khaled Nordin and the defense ministers of other ASEAN countries, for their part, commended the achievements in China-ASEAN relations, expressed approval of China's respect for ASEAN's centrality in the regional architecture, and expressed their readiness to strengthen defense and security cooperation with China to jointly safeguard regional peace and stability.
The participating countries also agreed to hold the second China-ASEAN joint maritime exercise in 2027.
In addition, on Friday, Dong Jun also held talks with the heads of the defense departments of the United States, New Zealand and Thailand, who attended the 12th ASEAN Plus Defense Ministers' Meeting. –0–
