SHENZHEN, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) — A 4,500-ton research vessel set sail from Shekou Port in Shenzhen, south China's Guangdong Province, on Friday, marking the start of a global marine expedition and a 10-year scientific program aimed at promoting international cooperation and public involvement in marine research.
The first phase of the expedition will conclude on November 3 and will cover the Shenhu region in the northern South China Sea. The research will include seawater sampling, coastal sediment studies, and deep-sea sampling, providing data for research in areas such as marine geology, geophysics, geochemistry, and biology.
The research is being conducted on board the Xiangyanghong-10, a vessel designed and constructed by China.
The expedition, officially dubbed "Deep-Sea Voyage 2035," was launched by the China Association for the Study and Development of Marine Mineral Resources, the Graduate Institute of Ocean Science and Technology of the Southern University of Science and Technology, and several other institutions.
Over the next 10 years, the program will collaborate with businesses, global partners, and the public to conduct sea trials of advanced technologies and pioneering citizen science projects. –0–
