BUSAN, South Korea, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) — Chinese President Xi Jinping said here Thursday that he is willing to continue working with U.S. President Donald Trump to lay a solid foundation for bilateral ties and create a favorable environment for the development of both countries.
At a meeting with the White House, he stated that under their joint leadership, Sino-American relations remain generally stable. "China and the United States should be partners and friends. This is what history has taught us and what reality demands," Xi Jinping said.
Given the differences in national circumstances, the two sides do not always see eye to eye, and it is normal for friction to arise from time to time between the world's two leading economies, he added.
"Facing winds, waves, and challenges, the heads of state of both countries stand at the helm. We must stay on course, maintain control of the overall situation, and ensure the steady progress of the great ship of China-US relations," the Chinese President emphasized.
Xi Jinping stated that China's economic development is showing good momentum: in the first three quarters of 2025, the country's economy grew by 5.2 percent, and total foreign trade in goods increased by 4 percent. This is no easy achievement, he noted, given the internal and external challenges, adding that the Chinese economy is like a boundless ocean: vast, resilient, and promising. "We have the confidence and ability to cope with all kinds of risks and challenges," Xi Jinping emphasized.
According to the Chinese leader, at its 4th Plenary Session, the 20th CPC Central Committee discussed and approved the proposal for developing the 15th Five-Year Plan for Social and Economic Development /2026-2030/
For the past 70 years, we have been working on the same plan from generation to generation to bring it to life, he said.
“We have no intention of challenging or replacing any country,” Xi Jinping said. “We have always focused on effectively managing China’s own affairs, improving ourselves, and providing development opportunities for all countries around the world.”
Xi Jinping stated that China will continue to deepen reforms across the board, expand opening-up, and promote high-quality economic growth, achieving a commensurate increase in output, comprehensive human development, and shared prosperity for all. He called this an important secret to China's success, adding that such a policy will also expand the scope for cooperation with the United States.
Xi Jinping noted that the Chinese and American trade and economic negotiating teams held an in-depth exchange of views on major trade and economic issues and reached consensus on resolving various problems. He called on both teams to quickly formulate and finalize follow-up steps and ensure effective implementation of the common agreements, so that reliable results can instill confidence in both countries and the global economy.
Chinese-American trade and economic relations have experienced ups and downs recently, but this has also inspired some ideas on both sides, Xi Jinping stated. He emphasized that business-to-business relations should continue to serve as a stabilizer and driving force in Chinese-American ties, without becoming a stumbling block or source of friction.
Beijing and Washington must think big and recognize the long-term benefits of cooperation, and avoid falling into a vicious cycle of retaliatory measures, the Chinese president emphasized. He called on both trade and economic teams to continue negotiations in the spirit of equality, mutual respect, and mutual benefit, continually narrowing the list of issues and expanding cooperation.
Dialogue is better than confrontation, Xi Jinping said, adding that China and the United States should maintain communication through various channels and at various levels to strengthen mutual understanding. He noted that the two countries have significant potential for joint work in combating illegal migration, telecommunications fraud and money laundering, artificial intelligence, and epidemic response.
Relevant agencies should strengthen dialogue and exchanges and pursue mutually beneficial cooperation, Xi Jinping stated. The countries should also cooperate on regional and international platforms, he added.
"The world today faces many serious challenges. China and the United States can jointly shoulder the responsibilities befitting major powers and work together to achieve more significant and concrete results for the benefit of both countries and the entire world," the Chinese president emphasized.
Xi Jinping noted that in 2026, China will host the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting, and the United States will host the G20 summit. The two sides can support each other to make both events productive in promoting global economic growth and improving global economic governance, he added.
