Istanbul, October 30 (Xinhua) — The recent Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Tianjin and last year's BRICS summit in Kazan clearly demonstrated that the Global South is gaining increasing influence and making independent decisions. This was stated by Antonio Fallico, president of the non-profit association "Understand Eurasia," at the opening of the 18th Verona Eurasian Economic Forum, which is taking place in Istanbul on October 30-31.

“Certain events in the world, in particular the recent SCO summit in Tianjin, which followed last year’s BRICS summit in Kazan, clearly showed that the Global South, or, as it is sometimes called, the global majority, is gaining significant weight and making independent decisions,” he said.

A. Fallico emphasized that the Global South is seeking new mechanisms for interaction, coordination, and solutions to the most pressing challenges of our time. Moreover, it now has the opportunity to advance its aspirations and realize them.

A. Fallico pointed out the West's desire to continue to impose its choices, without taking into account the ongoing changes, interests, and even fears of others, ignoring them, believing that it is the only holder of absolute truth.

As the Italian expert noted, the Global South and its emerging structures are built on the principle of mutual respect. "Despite their different political, economic, military, and technological weights, all countries are listened to and treated with respect. The stronger countries do not impose their will on others. A consensus is formed, and they try to find solutions that suit everyone," he said.

According to A. Fallico, such interaction within the structures of the Global South gives them strength and makes them very attractive.

The Italian expert also noted that the experience of the Verona Eurasian Economic Forums in previous years demonstrated the need to give the floor to the BRICS countries and the Eurasian Economic Union, given their current demographic, economic, and geopolitical role.

The Verona Eurasian Economic Forum was established in Verona in 2007 at the initiative of the Italian association "Explore Eurasia." Since 2022, it has been held outside Italy to allow everyone to participate without restrictions or discrimination. This year, the forum brought together over a thousand participants: prominent politicians, heads of leading companies, academics, and experts from more than 30 countries.
