WUHAN, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) — Chinese tech giant Xiaomi launched its first smart home appliance factory in Wuhan, central China's Hubei Province, on Tuesday, signaling the company's expansion beyond smartphones and cars.
The project, which specializes in air conditioner production, is Xiaomi's third large-scale smart factory, following the opening of automobile and smartphone factories.
The new plant covers over 50 hectares. The total investment in the first phase of the project amounted to 2.5 billion yuan (approximately $352.83 million). The plant is equipped with cutting-edge technologies, including a digital twin, artificial intelligence (AI)-based visual inspection, air logistics systems, and other technologies, enabling visualization and data-driven management of the entire production process.
Xiaomi's General Manager of Large Home Appliances, Shan Liangyu, said the plant will produce one high-quality air conditioner every 6.5 seconds.
The plant's air conditioner production capacity is expected to reach a maximum of 7 million units per year, bringing its annual production value to 14 billion yuan, he continued.
The plant's launch comes amidst the rapid growth of China's smart home appliance sector. According to a recently published industry report, the country's smart home appliance market is expected to reach approximately 756 billion yuan by 2024, up 3 percent year-on-year. This year, the market is projected to reach 793.8 billion yuan.
According to the China Chamber of Commerce for Electromechanical Products Import and Export, China's home appliance exports increased by 14.8 percent year-on-year to $128.64 billion last year. -0-
