Moscow, October 29 (Xinhua) — China supports the idea of a qualitative transformation of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) and its transformation into a driving force for regional economic integration. This opinion was expressed by Oleg Timofeev, associate professor at Peoples' Friendship University of Russia (RUDN University), in an interview with Xinhua, commenting on the upcoming informal meeting of APEC leaders, which will be held from October 31 to November 1 in the Republic of Korea.

"The initiative of Chinese President Xi Jinping to create an Asia-Pacific community with a shared future, based on openness, inclusiveness, innovative growth, connectivity, and mutually beneficial cooperation, demonstrates the Chinese leadership's support for the idea of a qualitative transformation of APEC, its transformation into a driving force for regional economic integration, an incubator of ideas and concepts for globalization that take into account the interests of countries adhering to various models of economic development, including countries of the Global South," he said.

As the expert noted, the Asia-Pacific region (APR) has long been a priority area for China's foreign economic cooperation. China's largest trading partners—the ASEAN countries, the United States, the Republic of Korea, Japan, and Russia—are located in this region. "Furthermore, countries in the region highly value the responsible international policy of the Chinese leadership, aimed at achieving mutual benefit, ensuring inclusive development, and assisting countries most in need in implementing their own economic development strategies," the scientist added.

O. Timofeev emphasized that the main challenge to the normal functioning of the cooperation model that emerged within APEC is currently the threat of disruption to established trade and economic ties in the Asia-Pacific region. "It was the Asia-Pacific region that became the primary target of US President Donald Trump's trade tariffs in 2025. Furthermore, it is in the Asia-Pacific region that competition between regional multilateral projects is unfolding in its most acute form," he said.

According to the expert, the importance of Russia and China for each other's economic development has increased dramatically in recent years. Russia's Far East has once again become one of the vanguards of trade and economic cooperation with China. "The treaties and agreements signed during Russian President Vladimir Putin's recent visit to China will undoubtedly elevate cooperation between our countries to a new level, making it more sustainable and less susceptible to the geopolitical turbulence of the modern world," concluded O. Timofeev.
