Baku, October 29 /Xinhua/ — China may increase cargo traffic along the Middle Corridor (the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route) as it becomes more efficient and cost-effective, Azerbaijani logistics expert Rauf Agamirzayev recently stated in an interview with Xinhua.
According to the expert, in the current geopolitically complex environment, the Middle Corridor is particularly important for China. It is multimodal, and several additional routes will open in the coming years following the signing of the peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
R. Agamirzayev recalled that Azerbaijan currently has the international ports of Alat and Hovsan on the Caspian Sea, and recently opened the port of Zira with an STS crane, which allows for the much faster handling of container cargo.
Touching on the challenges hindering the development of the Middle Corridor, R. Agamirzayev pointed to infrastructure challenges that require investment for rapid resolution, as well as the insufficient level of digitalization. Furthermore, it is necessary to work on the green agenda and address the shallowing of the Caspian Sea, which requires dredging and specialized vessels. Azerbaijan is making active efforts to address all these issues, the expert emphasized.
He also said that Azerbaijani companies are actively participating in regional infrastructure projects: some sections need to be completed, while others need major renovations. In this regard, according to R. Agamirzayev, Azerbaijan is interested in Chinese experience. –0–
