BEIJING, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) — The China Innovation Index, a barometer of the country's innovation capacity, showed stable growth in 2024, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Wednesday.

According to the State Statistical Office, the country's innovation index increased by 5.3 percent from the 2023 level to 174.2 last year.

The innovation environment continued to improve, reflected in increased investment in innovation, rapid growth in the production of innovative products, and strengthening of economic drivers, the State Statistical Office reports.

The country's basic research expenditure increased by 10.7 percent year-on-year to RMB 250.09 billion (US$35.3 billion) in 2024, maintaining rapid double-digit growth. The share of basic research in total R&D expenditure reached a record high of 6.88 percent last year.

Remarkably, the number of invention patents issued in China increased by 13.5 percent year-on-year to reach 1.05 million in 2024. -0-
