JERUSALEM, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) — Israel resumed strikes on the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, saying militants in the Palestinian enclave shot and killed an Israeli soldier.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday ordered the military to "immediately launch powerful strikes on the Gaza Strip," his office said in a statement.

At least 63 people, including more than 20 children, were killed in overnight strikes, Gaza health authorities said on Wednesday.

The Israeli Defense Ministry identified the slain Israeli soldier as 37-year-old Staff Sergeant Yona Efraim Feldbaum.

In a statement released Tuesday evening, Hamas denied any involvement in the Rafah attack and reaffirmed its "commitment to the ceasefire agreement." The group condemned what it called Israel's "criminal bombardment" of Gaza.

Despite a ceasefire that took effect on October 10, Israeli warplanes resumed bombing the Gaza Strip, hitting southern and eastern Gaza City, the al-Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza, and the al-Amal neighborhood of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip.

US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that the ceasefire would hold, telling reporters that "nothing" could threaten it. He added that Israel "must strike back" because an Israeli soldier was killed.
