Goma, DRC, October 28 (Xinhua) — At least 14 people were killed in a fire on Sunday evening in Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu province in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), local sources reported.

According to a relative of the victims, 14 people were trapped in their homes. The staircase in his sister's house caught fire, preventing the entire family from escaping, and they died as a result.

Local civil society representatives also confirmed the deaths. Several others were injured in the fire and hospitalized, according to eyewitnesses.

The fire destroyed more than ten homes. The cause of the incident is under investigation.
