BEIJING, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) — An amendment to China's Cybersecurity Law was approved on Tuesday by the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), the country's top legislature.

The document was approved at the 18th session of the Standing Committee of the 14th NPC and will come into force on January 1, 2026.

To address the growing need to regulate artificial intelligence (AI) while promoting its development, the amendment proposes supporting fundamental research in AI, promoting key technologies such as algorithms, and building AI-related infrastructure, including training data resources and computing power.

In addition, the document provides for the improvement of ethical standards in the field of AI, strengthening of monitoring and risk assessment, as well as security oversight.

The amendment aims to strengthen legal responsibility in the field of cybersecurity, improve coordination and consistency with relevant laws.

The current Cybersecurity Law of the People's Republic of China, which is the fundamental legislation in this area, was adopted in 2016. -0-
