Minsk, October 27 (Xinhua) — Lithuania has completely closed traffic across the Belarusian-Lithuanian border several times over the past week, the State Customs Committee of Belarus reported.
As the agency noted, last week the Lithuanian side closed the border with Belarus for several hours four times: on October 22, the border was closed by the Lithuanian side for six hours, on October 25, from midnight to 12:00, and on the night of October 26, traffic through the Medininkai and Šalčininkai road checkpoints was suspended for three and a half hours (from 11:00 PM to 2:30 AM).
"Each time, the Lithuanian authorities do this without warning, creating desperate situations for drivers of passenger cars at the checkpoints during the closure. People find themselves at a loss as to what to do next. For truck drivers, the temporary closure isn't particularly critical, considering that Lithuanians are already working 10 times slower than they should. However, waiting an additional day to enter Lithuania on top of the several days already in place shouldn't become the norm," the State Customs Committee noted.
On Monday morning, the press service of the State Customs Committee of Belarus announced that traffic on the Belarusian-Lithuanian border had not been restored. "Nine hours after the reopening of traffic across the Belarusian-Lithuanian border, Lithuanian authorities decided to close the checkpoints. Traffic was suspended on October 26 at 11:30 p.m. and has still not been restored /10:00 a.m./. This time, the opening time of the checkpoints has not been announced," the committee explained.
