New Delhi, October 27 (Xinhua) — India resumed direct flights to mainland China on Sunday evening after a five-year hiatus, Indian officials announced.
IndiGo's maiden flight, carrying 176 passengers, took off from Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata, the capital of the eastern Indian state of West Bengal, and landed in Guangzhou, southern China.
As Pieter Elbers, CEO of the Indian airline, noted in a press release in early October, the resumption of direct flights will once again allow for unhindered travel, the transport of goods, and the strengthening of bilateral ties between the two largest and fastest-growing economies in terms of population.
Direct flights between India and mainland China operated until early 2020, when they were suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
