Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk, leading a Russian delegation, arrived in the capital of Malaysia to participate in events organized by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
In Kuala Lumpur, Alexey Overchuk will take part in the 20th East Asia Summit (EAS) and hold a number of bilateral meetings.
The East Asia Summit was established in 2005 as a forum for dialogue among leaders of Asia-Pacific countries on a wide range of political and economic issues of common interest, as well as for developing regional practical cooperation along agreed-upon lines. The summit is held annually in conjunction with ASEAN meetings.
The EAS is attended by the countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASAN) – Brunei, Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines – as well as ASEAN dialogue partners – Russia (since 2010), Australia, India, China, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, the United States and Japan.
Since its inception, the East Asia Summit has focused on six thematic areas: energy, finance, emergency response, healthcare, education, and regional connectivity. Subsequently, this list, updated through the approval of the EAS Action Plans for 2018–2023 and 2024–2028, was expanded to include maritime cooperation, food security, economics, sustainable development, poverty alleviation, and tourism.
The Malaysia summit agenda will focus on current regional development issues, as well as prospects for expanding practical cooperation. Russia advocates for expanding the range of practical activities within the EAS platform, with a focus on implementing leadership decisions.
