KUALA LUMPUR, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) — The 47th ASEAN Summit and related summits under the theme of "Inclusiveness and Resilience" kicked off in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Sunday.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, ASEAN Chair 2025, said that heightened competition and growing uncertainty are testing not only ASEAN's economy but also ASEAN's collective resolve to maintain faith in cooperation.

He noted that ASEAN's strength lies in the belief that respect and reason still bind members together.

His speech was followed by the signing of a declaration admitting East Timor to ASEAN, marking the island nation's entry as the regional organization's 11th member.

During the summit, which runs from Sunday to Tuesday, leaders of member countries will focus their discussions on issues related to the formation of the ASEAN community and the external relations of the regional organization.

They will discuss, among other things, ways to deepen regional integration, stimulate economic growth and strengthen connectivity in the region.

ASEAN was founded in 1967 and consists of Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and East Timor. –0–
