KUALA LUMPUR, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) — Cambodia and Thailand signed a joint declaration on peace on Sunday at the 47th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in the Malaysian capital.
The declaration was signed by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.
At the signing ceremony, Khun Manet said Cambodia reaffirms its strong commitment to fully implement the joint declaration and to continue working closely with Thailand and all partners to ensure lasting peace that will bring tangible benefits to the people of both countries.
For his part, A. Charnvirakul stated that the full implementation of the declaration will lay the foundation for lasting peace and, more importantly, will contribute to the restoration of relations between Thailand and Cambodia.
On July 24, armed clashes broke out between Cambodian and Thai forces on the border. The clashes left over a hundred people dead and injured.
On August 7, at an extraordinary meeting in Malaysia, Cambodia and Thailand agreed on the details of a ceasefire and signed an agreement pledging to maintain the current deployment of troops without further movements and not to increase their military presence along the border.
