Paris, October 26 (Xinhua) — French police on Saturday made further progress in their investigation into the recent Louvre jewelry theft, detaining two people for questioning, local media reported Sunday.
One suspect was arrested at Paris's Charles de Gaulle Airport around 10:00 PM on Saturday as he prepared to board an international flight, and the second was detained shortly thereafter in the Seine-Saint-Denis area near Paris. Both were taken into custody on charges of organized robbery and criminal conspiracy, Le Parisien and Paris Match reported.
The Paris prosecutor's office confirmed in a statement released Sunday morning that the arrests took place Saturday evening, adding that one of the suspects was planning to leave the country, local media reported.
According to BFM TV, the arrests have not yet resulted in the recovery of the stolen items.
Last Sunday, four thieves stole eight pieces of jewelry from the French Crown Jewels collection, which were housed in the world-famous Louvre Museum in Paris. More than 100 investigators are working to apprehend the criminals and recover the stolen jewels.
