KUALA LUMPUR, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) — East Timor was welcomed as the 11th member of the regional body following an official ceremony at the 47th ASEAN summit on Sunday.

The signing ceremony of the declaration on accession to ASEAN was attended by East Timor President José Ramos-Horta and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao.

East Timor applied for ASEAN membership in 2011. In November 2022, ASEAN member states largely agreed to accept the state as a new member of the regional organization.

The 47th ASEAN Summit and associated summits are hosted by Malaysia, the 2025 ASEAN Chair, and will run from Sunday to Tuesday.

ASEAN was founded in 1967 and consists of Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and East Timor. –0–
