BEIJING, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) — A farewell ceremony was held in Beijing on Friday for the late physicist Yang Zhenning, a Nobel laureate, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and professor at Tsinghua University.
The farewell ceremony began at around 9:00 a.m. at the Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery.
Family members and friends of Yang Zhenning, representatives from Tsinghua University, and representatives from various walks of life gathered to pay their last respects to Yang Zhenning.
Yang Zhenning died in Beijing on October 18 at the age of 104.
Yang Zhenning was born in 1922 in Hefei (Anhui Province, eastern China). In the 1940s, he moved to the United States to pursue his education and academic research, where he later remained and became a teacher. In 1957, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics.
The Yang-Mills gauge theory, developed by Yang Zhenning and Robert Mills, is one of the most important achievements of 20th-century physics.
For more than 20 years after his return to China, Yang Zhenning taught at Tsinghua University, making important contributions to the training and recruitment of talented professionals and promoting international academic exchanges. -0-
