UN, October 24 /Xinhua/ — China is calling for a lasting ceasefire in Gaza. China's Permanent Representative to the UN, Fu Cong, stated this at an open debate in the Security Council on Thursday.
“The current ceasefire must become the basis for a comprehensive and lasting truce,” he stressed.
Nevertheless, violations of the agreement between Israel and Hamas continue, resulting in civilian casualties, the diplomat said. "China calls on all parties concerned to fully comply with the ceasefire agreement, work toward a truly comprehensive and lasting truce, and ensure the restoration of security and stability in Gaza," Fu Cong noted.
He stated that despite the partial resumption of humanitarian aid deliveries, many obstacles remain, and urgent humanitarian needs remain far from being met. Israel, as the occupying power, must fulfill its obligations under international humanitarian law, open all border crossings, guarantee the mass entry of humanitarian supplies into Gaza and their safe and orderly distribution, and lift restrictions on aid operations carried out by humanitarian organizations, the Permanent Representative emphasized.
Gaza is the Palestinian homeland, not a bargaining chip in international politics, Fu Cong declared. Any agreement on the future of the Strip must be based on the consensus principle of "Palestinians governing Palestine" and respect the will of the Palestinian people, he added.
After two years of indiscriminate bombing, Gaza is devastated and uninhabitable, and it is crucial to begin reconstruction as soon as possible and restore people's livelihoods, the diplomat said.
The implementation of the "two-state solution" is the only and uncontested solution to the Palestinian issue, the Permanent Representative noted. "Only through the establishment of an independent State of Palestine and the realization of the legitimate national rights of Palestinians will it be possible to address historical injustice and the root causes of violence and achieve lasting peaceful coexistence between Palestine and Israel," he added.
According to Fu Cong, Israel must cease settlement activity in the West Bank and cease undermining the governance of the Palestinian National Authority. The international community should reject unilateral actions that threaten the "two-state solution" and urgently support Palestinian independence and its full membership in the UN, he emphasized.
The Security Council bears primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security and should play a positive role in protecting peace and stability in the Gaza Strip, the Permanent Representative stated.
