JERUSALEM, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) — U.S. Vice President James David Vance on Thursday sharply criticized the Israeli Knesset (parliament) vote on the annexation of the West Bank during his visit to Israel, calling it a "political stunt."
As J.D. Vance told reporters at Ben-Gurion International Airport near Tel Aviv before his departure, he was told it was a "political stunt" with no practical effect. "If it was a political stunt, it was a very stupid one, and I personally take it as an insult," he said.
J.D. Vance noted that the West Bank will not be annexed by Israel and this will remain the policy of the administration of US President Donald Trump.
On October 22, the Knesset, by a vote of 25 to 24, approved a bill extending Israeli law and governance to all settlements in the West Bank, known in Israel as Judea and Samaria. The bill, proposed by MK Avi Maoz of the far-right Noam party, has now been sent to the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee for further discussion.
The US Vice President stressed that, despite the “symbolic nature of the vote,” Washington is “definitely unhappy with it.” –0–
