KAMPALA, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) — A multi-vehicle road accident in western Uganda has killed 46 people and injured several others.

According to a police statement, the accident involving four vehicles, including two passenger buses, a truck and a smaller car, occurred on Wednesday at around 12:15 a.m. local time on the Kampala-Gulu Highway in Kiryandongo County.

According to preliminary reports, a bus travelling from Kampala to Gulu attempted to overtake a truck and collided head-on with another bus travelling in the opposite direction, causing a chain reaction that resulted in several vehicles overturning.

Police initially reported 63 deaths, but later revised the figure to 46 after it emerged that some unconscious victims had been mistakenly counted as dead.

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni expressed his condolences in a message posted on social media site X and urged drivers to be more careful on the roads.
