Abuja, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) — At least 35 people were killed and 46 injured in a fuel tanker accident and explosion in central Nigeria's Niger state, local authorities said on Tuesday.

The explosion occurred when some residents tried to scoop petrol from an overturned tanker in Essa village in the Katcha area of Niger state, said Aishatou Saadu, a sector commander of the Federal Road Security Corps, who confirmed the incident to reporters on Tuesday evening.

A preliminary police investigation has shown that the accident was an isolated incident "caused by the loss of control of the vehicle by the tanker driver," Saadu said, adding that many of the victims suffered severe burns.

In a statement released Tuesday evening, Niger State Governor Mohammed Oumar Bago described the tragedy as “disturbing, sad and heartbreaking,” calling it “another painful and difficult moment for the people and government of the state.” –0–
