MEXICO CITY, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) — A total of 2,382 Mexicans have been detained in the United States since January this year, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said at a morning press conference at the National Palace on Tuesday.
She said 1,390 Mexicans, or about 58.3 percent of the total, were detained between June 6 and October 20 during immigration raids conducted by the U.S. government.
K. Sheinbaum expressed concern about the legal status of those detained, which has not yet been fully clarified.
"We don't agree with the way our brothers and sisters are being treated there," the president said, referring to the immigration raids.
Mexico has sent several diplomatic notes to Washington in connection with its new anti-immigration policy and is providing assistance to citizens who need legal advice to file complaints about human rights violations, K. Sheinbaum confirmed.
She emphasized that victims themselves must file appropriate complaints to receive consular support and further legal assistance. –0–
