PARIS, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) — Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy arrived at Paris' Santé prison on Tuesday to serve his five-year sentence.

The 70-year-old former Conservative leader was found guilty of complicity in a criminal enterprise over his alleged role in accepting funding from Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi for his election campaign.

On Tuesday morning, N. Sarkozy condemned what he called a “judicial scandal” in a post on the social network X.

“I want to tell the French people with all my unwavering strength that this morning it is not the former President of the Republic who is imprisoned, but an innocent man,” he wrote.

On September 25, the Paris Criminal Court sentenced N. Sarkozy to five years in prison, finding him guilty of complicity in a criminal organization in the “Libyan case” regarding foreign financing of the presidential election campaign in 2007. –0–
