BEIJING, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) — The world's fastest bullet train, the CR450, has begun a series of preliminary tests on China's high-speed rail system, reaching a speed of 453 km per hour.
The CR450 train, designed for a maximum test speed of 450 km/h and a commercial operating speed of 400 km/h, is currently undergoing qualification tests on the high-speed railway linking eastern China's metropolis Shanghai and the southwestern cities of Chongqing and Chengdu, the Science and Technology Daily reported on Monday.
The high-speed train can accelerate from zero to 350 km/h in just 4 minutes 40 seconds, and two trains set a record by overtaking each other with a combined speed of 896 km/h.
Compared to its predecessor, the CR400, the CR450 features a longer, sharper nose, a 20-centimeter lower body height, and a 50-ton weight reduction, resulting in a 22 percent reduction in aerodynamic drag.
The CR400 Fuxing high-speed trains currently operate at 350 km/h.
According to technical requirements, the CR450 must travel 600,000 km before it can be used for passenger transport.
