Doctors at the N.V. Sklifosovsky Research Institute of Emergency Care performed a unique rib removal surgery in Russia, using tiny incisions. This surgery helped a 40-year-old man who had suffered pain for 10 years and was unable to use his left arm due to a genetic abnormality. This was announced by the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Social Development. Anastasia Rakova.
"Moscow's priority is to make high-tech medicine as accessible as possible to every resident and to help patients with even the rarest diseases. Recently, Sklifosovsky saved a man who, due to a congenital condition, had lived with constant pain in his left arm for 10 years, gradually losing control of it. The unusual structure of his ribs affected key nerves and arteries. Our doctors masterfully performed a unique operation that was previously considered extremely complex and risky. Moscow surgeons were the first in the country to use a new minimally invasive technique and, using specialized equipment, performed the surgery thoracoscopically, meaning with the utmost care. Using special instruments, they entered the space between the inner surface of the chest and the lungs through small punctures, divided the rib into fragments, and gradually removed it. The risks to the patient were minimal. This method not only avoided serious complications but also significantly facilitated rehabilitation. The patient has now been discharged," said Anastasia Rakova.
The patient was diagnosed with a rare genetic rib anomaly at birth: his ribs had fused abnormally, compressing key veins, nerves, and arteries. This condition occurs in only one in 100,000 people, and in this case, doctors encountered an even more unique variation of the condition. The man's first rib was compressing the subclavian vein, which supplied blood to his left arm. He was unable to perform even the most basic daily tasks, such as lifting a grocery bag or taking out the trash. Any attempt to put weight on his left arm was accompanied by severe pain and varicose veins.
Without surgery, such patients are at risk of massive thrombosis, which often leads to stroke. Complications also include inflammation and suppuration of the limb, leading to complete loss of function.
The man consulted various specialists, but treatment was ineffective, and his condition worsened. The patient received treatment at the Sklifosovsky Research Institute. After a consultation in the thoracic surgery department, he was prescribed a specially designed procedure.
Removing the first rib requires the utmost skill, as it is located in close proximity to the subclavian vein and artery and is surrounded by numerous nerve endings. If the nerve is damaged during surgery, hand function can be completely impaired. Specialists spent four hours removing the rib, and the operation was successful, with no complications. Immediately afterward, the man felt relief; the pain in his arm subsided. Following follow-up examinations, he was discharged from the hospital.
