NICOSIA, October 20 (Xinhua) — Tufan Erhürman was elected the new leader of the Turkish Cypriots on Sunday, defeating incumbent leader Ersin Tatar in the runoff, local media reported.
T. Erhürman, chairman of the center-left Republican Turkish Party, garnered approximately 62.8% of the vote, while E. Tatar received 35.8%. He is expected to officially take office later this week, the Cyprus Mail reports.
The elections took place amid renewed diplomatic efforts on the Cyprus issue. According to media reports, a high-level meeting on Cyprus will be held in New York later this month.
Cyprus has remained divided since 1974, when Turkey intervened militarily following a coup by Greek army officers. Since then, the island has remained divided, with Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots living separately.
