BEIJING, October 20 (Xinhua) — China's labor market remained generally stable in the first three quarters of 2025, with the average unemployment rate in Chinese cities and towns reaching 5.2 percent during the reporting period. In September, the unemployment rate decreased by 0.1 percentage points month-on-month to 5.2 percent, according to data released Monday by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
Employment among key groups remained generally stable, while some service sectors, such as transportation and shipping, hotels and restaurants, and culture, sports and entertainment, saw an improvement in employment in the third quarter of 2025, thanks to ongoing employment-supporting policies and a vibrant summer tourism season, said NBS spokesperson Wang Pingping.
Against the backdrop of growing external uncertainties and instability, structural problems in the employment sector were relatively pronounced, Wang Pingping noted, adding that China will step up employment-supporting policies to maintain stability in the labor market.
According to China's 2025 targets, the survey unemployment rate in cities and towns should remain at around 5.5 percent, with more than 12 million new jobs created in cities and towns.
