SHANGHAI, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) — In the first three quarters of this year, the Changkai-Shanghai maritime route handled 154,000 tons of import and export cargo, valued at 3.97 billion yuan (about 559.37 million U.S. dollars), pushing trade between Shanghai and Peru up 56.9 percent year-on-year to 13.42 billion yuan, Shanghai Customs said Monday.

Compared with the first half of 2025, when the route carried 78,000 tons of cargo worth RMB 1.72 billion, the latest data shows a significant acceleration in growth, cementing the route's status as a "new bridge" for trade between China and Peru.

The first shipment of exhibits for the upcoming 8th China International Import Expo recently arrived at Shanghai's Yangshan Port. The shipment, consisting of 764 items, including alpaca-shaped soft toys and ceramics, arrived from the Peruvian port of Chancay. Notably, this marks the first time exhibition goods have been transported via this shipping route since the launch of the new trans-Pacific land-sea corridor connecting Latin America with Asia in late 2024.

The Port of Chancay, a deep-water hub and South America's first smart green port, is a flagship project of cooperation between China and Peru under the Belt and Road Initiative. The port's opening has reduced cargo transit time between the two countries from over a month to approximately 23 days, while transportation costs have been reduced by at least 20 percent.
