Washington/Bogota, October 20 (Xinhua) — Washington will immediately cut aid to Colombia and announce a new tariff rate on Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Sunday.
“Starting today…/these payments or/ any other forms of financial assistance, subsidies will no longer be provided to Colombia,” D. Trump wrote on the social network Truth Social, without specifying which programs or funds would be affected.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump also said he would announce new tariffs on Colombian imports on Monday.
In response to Washington's accusations on Sunday that Colombian President Gustavo Petro is an "illegal narco-leader," Colombia's Foreign Ministry said the allegations were "extremely serious and contrary to the dignity of the Colombian president."
The Colombian Foreign Ministry also accused the White House of directly threatening the country's sovereignty and condemned Washington's proposal for illegal intervention on Colombian territory, which violates international law and diplomacy, as well as international treaties protecting the sovereignty, independence, and right to self-determination of states.
Colombia intends to appeal to international organizations to defend its sovereignty and the dignity of its president, as well as to condemn interference in the country's internal affairs, the statement said.
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced on Saturday that American forces had attacked a vessel allegedly used by a Colombian rebel group to smuggle drugs, killing all three people on board.
Since early September, the Trump administration has launched a series of strikes on ships suspected of trafficking drugs in the southern Caribbean, killing at least 27 people.
G. Petro accused the US of using its anti-drug policy as a pretext to justify the use of force in the Caribbean to control oil reserves. In September, his US visa was revoked after he joined a pro-Palestinian demonstration and called on American soldiers to disobey Donald Trump's orders during the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
American media reported, citing the State Department, that Washington has provided more than $210 million in aid to Colombia this fiscal year. –0–
