Kinshasa, October 20 (Xinhua) — Health authorities may declare the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) over in early December if no new cases are detected by then, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Sunday.
The WHO Regional Office for Africa made the announcement after the last patient hospitalized with Ebola was discharged from a treatment center after making a full recovery. This marked a significant milestone in the country's fight against the deadly virus.
“This release marks the start of a 42-day countdown, after which the outbreak can be officially declared over, provided no new cases are identified,” the statement said.
Since the outbreak was declared on September 4, a total of 64 cases have been reported in the Bulapé health zone in Kasai Province in the central part of the country, including 53 confirmed and 11 probable. According to the WHO, 19 patients have recovered, and no new cases have been reported since September 25.
The DRC previously declared the end of the 15th Ebola outbreak in September 2022, which occurred in North Kivu province in the east of the country. –0–
