JERUSALEM/Gaza, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) — The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on Sunday said it carried out a new round of strikes on military targets of the Palestinian Hamas movement in the southern Gaza Strip.

According to the statement, the strikes were carried out by the IDF Southern Command “in response to the ceasefire violation that occurred earlier today.”

According to Israeli state television channel Kan TV, among the targets hit were tunnels that Hamas used to hold hostages.

This was the second series of Israeli strikes on Sunday, following previous airstrikes on the southern and northern Gaza Strip. According to Israeli television channel Channel 12, a total of 104 targets were hit that day.

The IDF said the initial strikes were in response to Hamas launching an anti-tank missile and fire on Israeli troops dismantling infrastructure in the southern Gaza city of Rafah.

Following the Hamas attack, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held consultations with Defense Minister Israel Katz and security officials, instructing them to act decisively against targets in the enclave.
