BEIJING, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) — China's National Meteorological Center (NMC) on Sunday issued a blue alert for Typhoon Fengshen, the 24th typhoon this year, as it strengthens and is expected to bring strong winds and heavy rain to parts of the southern region.
According to the National Meteorological Center, as of 5:00 PM on Sunday, the typhoon was over the waters off the west coast of the Philippine island of Luzon, with maximum winds near its center reaching 72 km/h.
The typhoon is expected to move northwestward at speeds of 25-30 km/h, gradually strengthening. According to forecasts, starting on October 21, while over the central and northern parts of the South China Sea, Fengshen will begin a southwesterly turn and approach the central coast of Vietnam, after which its intensity will gradually weaken.
The National Marine Center reported that from 8:00 PM on October 19 to 8:00 PM on October 20, squally winds caused by the typhoon may partially affect the waters of the East China Sea, the Taiwan Strait, the South China Sea, and the coastal areas of the provinces of Zhejiang, Fujian, and Guangdong.
Heavy rainfall is possible in places in Taiwan.
