Cape Town, October 18 (Xinhua) — Seven people were killed in a mass shooting in Cape Town, South Africa's Western Cape, on Friday night, local police said.
The incident occurred on the R53 highway in the suburban neighborhood of Philippi East. Seven men, aged between 20 and 30, were shot to death. Authorities called it a "senseless act of violence."
Western Cape police have launched a major search operation for the suspects, the South African Police Service said on Saturday morning.
"Detectives from the provincial Serious and Violent Crime Unit are investigating this case and pursuing all available leads to identify and apprehend those responsible for this brutal attack," the statement said.
“The Western Cape Police Command strongly condemned this senseless act of violence and confirmed that the investigation is a priority to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice as quickly as possible,” the department added.
The motive for the shooting remains unclear. No arrests have been made. –0–
