WASHINGTON, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) — John Bolton, who served as US national security adviser during Donald Trump's first term, was indicted on Thursday on charges of mishandling classified information.

A federal grand jury in the District of Maryland indicted him on eight counts of unauthorized transfer of national defense information and 10 counts of unlawful possession of it.

J. Bolton is charged with "serious crimes involving the mishandling of classified information," the U.S. Department of Justice said in a statement.

"Like many public officials throughout history, Ambassador Bolton kept diaries—that's not a crime. We look forward to the opportunity to once again prove that Ambassador Bolton did not share or retain any information illegally," said the defendant's attorney, Abbe Lowell, as quoted by CNN.

J. Bolton said he had become the target of a campaign of retaliation that D. Trump had unleashed against those he considered political opponents.

Let us recall that in less than a month, formal charges have already been brought against three high-ranking opponents of the US President. –0–
