UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) — China's Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Geng Shuang on Tuesday called on the international community to support Libya in completing its political transition.

Noting that the political and security situation in Libya has improved somewhat recently, the diplomat stated that deep-rooted structural problems remain unresolved, and achieving lasting peace and stability remains fraught with significant challenges. "This requires continued constructive support and assistance from the international community," Geng Shuang emphasized.

“Libya must be supported in completing its political transition,” he said at a meeting of the UN Security Council.

According to him, the UN, as the main channel for resolving the Libyan issue, plays an irreplaceable and vital role. The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has begun implementing its political roadmap, and the UN Security Council is currently discussing the extension of UNSMIL's mandate.

“We support the extension of UNSMIL’s mandate and call on the mission to prioritize advancing the political process to help Libya break the political impasse as soon as possible,” Geng Shuang said.

External powers must stop unlawfully interfering in Libya's affairs, he added, calling for efforts to help the country improve its security situation and restore development momentum. –0–
