URUMQI, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) — The checkpoint at Tianshan International Airport in Urumqi, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, recorded a significant increase in both passenger and cargo traffic in the first nine months of this year.
During the reporting period, the checkpoint handled more than 5,900 international passenger flights, and the number of border crossings through it exceeded 820,000 people, which is 65 percent more than the previous year.
Meanwhile, over 3,900 international cargo flights were inspected at the checkpoint, which is 358 percent more than in the same period last year.
According to data, in the first nine months of this year, 75,000 foreign tourists entered the country through the airport checkpoint visa-free, accounting for 61.6 percent of the total inbound tourist flow. It is worth noting that during this period, the number of travelers from Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, and Russia increased significantly, with passenger flow growth rates from each of these countries exceeding 96 percent.
According to the city border control service, this year, passenger and cargo routes were opened linking the checkpoint with Shymkent (Kazakhstan), Paris (France), Urgench (Uzbekistan), etc. Currently, the airport operates 24 international passenger routes to 17 countries and regions, as well as 32 international round-trip cargo routes to 21 countries and regions. -0-
