Los Angeles, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) — American company SpaceX launched a rocket carrying a prototype of the Starship spacecraft on Monday for its 11th test flight.
The rocket lifted off from the Starbase launch site in Texas at around 6:23 p.m. Central Time (11:23 p.m. GMT).
Shortly after liftoff, the Raptor engines ignited during hot stage separation. The Super Heavy booster made its planned splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico, and the Starship upper stage completed its climb and entered its planned passive flight phase.
During the launch, the spacecraft released eight simulated Starlink communications satellites from its cargo bay, which are following the same suborbital trajectory and are scheduled to burn up upon reentry.
After just over an hour of flight, Starship splashed down in the Indian Ocean.
SpaceX said the flight test aims to gather data for the next-generation Super Heavy launch vehicle, intensively test the vehicle's heat shield, and practice maneuvers that simulate the upper stage's approach to landing for future pad-return missions.
