Caracas, October 13 (Xinhua) — At least 14 people were killed on Monday in a collapse at a gold mine in Bolivar state in southeastern Venezuela, the National Risk Management System reported.
The accident occurred in the town of El Callao, in the municipality of Rossio. Flooding caused by heavy rains weakened the mine structure and led to its collapse.
Firefighters and civil defense personnel are working to retrieve bodies from the flooded area.
Rossio Mayor Vuielm Torrellas issued an official statement expressing his condolences to the families of the victims.
A command post has been established near the scene to coordinate drainage and repair work. –0–
