AMMAN, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) — Jordanian People's Democratic Party Secretary-General Abla Abouelbeh called on the global community to renew its commitment to gender justice and equality as the Global Women's Summit takes place in Beijing.
A. Abuelbeh took part in the 1995 World Conference on Women, which was also held in the Chinese capital.
In a recent exclusive interview with Xinhua, she stated that the 1995 conference successfully drew global attention to the status of women. It adopted key decisions aimed at advancing women's rights in politics, society, and in areas such as healthcare, education, and agriculture.
Reflecting on the progress made over the past three decades, A. Abuelbeh said some countries have made rapid progress on gender equality and equity, while others have unfortunately regressed.
According to her, wars, economic pressure and forced displacement in several Middle Eastern countries have seriously undermined women's rights and opportunities.
A. Abuelbeh also criticized the double standards characteristic of Western politics.
"The West talks about democracy and equality, but at the same time it promotes war and oppression in other parts of the world," she noted. "On the one hand, it defends democracy at home, but on the other, it oppresses other peoples and women in the Global South."
She emphasized that countries in the Global South must tell their own stories – stories of struggle, resilience, and achievement.
"We must remind the world that the fight against racism and colonialism is inseparable from the fight for women's rights," she said.
A. Abuelbeh also expressed confidence that a stable and inclusive society contributes to the empowerment of women, citing China as an example.
She noted that China's achievements in human rights and development are impressive, and the country's success in ensuring sustainable development and social stability naturally benefits women. The Beijing summit will give new impetus to advancing women's rights worldwide, she added.
