ANTANANARIVO, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) — Madagascar's National Assembly, the country's lower house of parliament, voted to impeach President Andry Rajoelina at an extraordinary session in the capital, Antananarivo, on Tuesday, despite the presidential office's earlier announcement of the chamber's dissolution.

"President A. Rajoelina has been impeached. Of the 131 deputies present at the vote, 130 voted for impeachment, and one abstained," Deputy Speaker of the House Siteni Randrianasoloniaiko announced after the meeting.

This decision was made several hours after A. Rajoelina announced the dissolution of the National Assembly.

According to local media, quoting S. Randrianasoloniaiko, the decree on dissolution “has no legal force due to the lack of official approval.”

On the same day, Colonel Michael Randrianina, an officer in the Madagascar army, announced the transfer of state power in the country to the control of a military council, which included representatives of the army, gendarmerie, and national police.

M. Randrianirina stated that the constitution had been suspended and new state structures had been created “to meet the aspirations of the people of Madagascar.”

The colonel also announced the dissolution of key state institutions, including the Senate, the Supreme Constitutional Court and the National Independent Electoral Commission. –0–
