LANZHOU, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) — A dialogue of world mayors kicked off Monday in Dunhuang, an ancient city on the Silk Road in northwest China's Gansu Province. Representatives from 10 countries, including mayors, their representatives, diplomats accredited in China, and young sinologists, participated in the dialogue.

The aim of the dialogue is to discuss issues related to the opportunities and challenges in the field of cultural cities management.

The event, entitled "Symphony of Civilizations, Resonance in Harmony," will focus on practical governance issues, including harnessing the innate resources of cities, protecting their environments, green development, and building smart megacities. Participants will exchange experiences in protecting urban cultural heritage and urban governance to contribute and share their wisdom in promoting sustainable development.

According to the dialogue participants, urbanization is currently accelerating in various countries, and the question of how to balance cultural heritage protection and urban development is becoming increasingly important. In the face of global challenges, strengthening international cooperation is the key to overcoming them. The current dialogue is contributing to the deepening of practical cooperation between cities.

As the host city of the current dialogue, Dunhuang boasts three UNESCO World Heritage sites and 266 cultural monuments of various types. In recent years, it has made significant strides in preserving its cultural heritage while simultaneously improving the quality of urban life.

Yu Chenghui, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Gansu Provincial People's Congress, noted at the opening of the event that the current dialogue will facilitate the exchange of experiences and expand cooperation, help cities find new solutions to pressing issues such as cultural heritage protection, urban governance, and sustainable development, and will also have a positive impact on jointly addressing new challenges in global development.
