Yaounde, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) — Opposition candidate Issa Tchiroma Bakary claimed victory in Cameroon's presidential election held on Sunday early Tuesday.

In a televised address to his supporters, he declared that the voting results showed a "convincing victory."

"Our victory is clear. It must be respected. The people have made their choice," said I. C. Bakari, who previously served as a government spokesman and resigned to run for president. Incumbent President Paul Biya, who has led the country for 43 years, also ran.

The government has not yet responded to his statement.

On Sunday, the head of the country's electoral commission said that the election results would be announced by the Constitutional Council "no later than 15 days after the closing date of the polling stations," making I. C. Bakari's statement premature. –0–
