SHANGHAI, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) — The 2nd World Conference on Sinology, themed "Historical and Modern China: A Global Horizon," opened in Shanghai, east China, on Tuesday.
Around 500 renowned experts and scholars from around the world will participate in in-depth discussions on this topic. The conference is expected to include various sub-forums, an urban civilization exhibition, and other events.
Li Shulei, a member of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee and head of the Propaganda Department of the CPC Central Committee, attended the conference and delivered a keynote speech.
Chen Jining, a member of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee and Secretary of the CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee, also attended the event.
Participants from China and abroad noted that Sinology should view Chinese civilization as an organically unified whole, analyzing the country's social, economic, and political landscape within a broader historical and cultural framework.
They emphasized the importance of explaining modernization in a Chinese style to present a genuine, multifaceted, and comprehensive China to the world. Participants also supported the Global Civilization Initiative, pledging to act as ambassadors to facilitate exchanges and mutual learning among civilizations.
The sub-forums will cover topics such as Chinese-style modernization, Sinological studies in the age of digital intelligence, and the role of youth in Sinological studies in the future.
The current conference, organized by the State Council Information Office and the Shanghai People's Government with the support of other government departments and academic institutions, is also expected to unveil an initiative to develop global Chinese studies and present a list of recommended readings for research in this area. –0–
