Beijing, October 13 (Xinhua) — China remains committed to integrating women's issues into the grandiose practice of Chinese modernization and, thanks to years of effort, has achieved historic progress in this direction, Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Monday.

In his speech at the opening ceremony of the Global Women's Summit, Xi Jinping noted that China has won the largest fight against poverty in human history and lifted 690 million Chinese women into a moderately prosperous society, achieving the poverty reduction target set out in the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development ahead of schedule.

China also leads high- and middle-income countries in key indicators of women's and children's health, Xi Jinping emphasized, noting that the country's maternal mortality rate has fallen by nearly 80 percent since 1995. -0-
